Existing Reviews
Existing Reviews Essential reading for the overall topic of algal biomass and its potential as a sustainable energy source has been the review paper by Aitken & Antizar-Ladislao (2012). The paper summarises the potential benefits of algal biomass, current state of research and technologies available in all stages of production of biofuels, the challenges faced by the industry and further research required. The harvesting section gives a well-structured overview of the methods available.
A very useful study focusing on harvesting (dewatering) methods of microalgae was conducted Uduman et al. (2010). This gave in-depth breakdowns of the techniques in use today and their merits. Table II below in the paper gives a summary which is a useful reference. Although this project has a focus on anaerobic digestion (in which water content is not important), the criteria given for quantitative evaluation of the harvesting technique and measuring removal efficiency is beneficial (Section II).
